See that wee building next to the Buchanan Street Galleries car park… that’s got a lift which goes 10 storeys down a mine shaft

  1. This isn’t supposed to be public knowledge, it’s still in use for undisclosed purposes by the government. It’s been a bit of an open secret among the history buffs but most of us have been discrete enough not to write an article on it!

  2. There’s a massive mine below the Joseph Black Building at Glasgow Uni. They used to take students down there on field trips in the days before Health & Safety was a thing.

  3. The story I heard – about 15-20 years ago – is that it’s an access lift to a small tunnel that extends towards Charing Cross direction. I think it contains cable runs for BT and is operated by them. You’ll see telephone cabinet boxes along that route that look like normal cabinet boxes except that they have vents on them that are apparently to provide air to the tunnel.

Take this with a pinch of salt, it’s an old vague memory told to me in a pub one night by some drunken engineer. He had some stories about other tunnels under George square or Buchanan street going towards central station

  4. Love stuff like this.
Can anyone help me find a post on here, maybe a couple years back, I think someone found an abandoned train tunnel near Kelvinbridge or Botanical Gardens or something?
There were really cool, creepy pictures.
